Teen patient portal account creation process changes

Resident and teen patient talking

Mayo Clinic is updating the process to create an adolescent (teen) account for patients ages 13–17 within the Mayo Clinic patient portal. Effective July 18, a parent or guardian is not required to be physically present when a teen account is created. Parents or guardians may still be part of either the phone call or in-person visit to create the account, but they are not required to be present.

Creating a teen account

There are two options for teen patients to set up an account:

  1. By phone: The teen may call Mayo Clinic Customer Assistance weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central Time at 877‑858‑0398 or 507‑538‑3879.
  2. In person: During the teen’s next visit to a Mayo Clinic facility, they can inquire at any check-in desk about creating a new teen account.

Teen patients will need:

  • A phone number at which they can receive a verification code. All portal accounts require multifactor authentication, which verifies the user by sending a code via text or by phone call.
  • A personal email address. Later this year, verification via email will also be an option for patients with portal accounts.

During account setup, the teen will create their own username and password Note: This new account will follow them into adulthood, so they should be careful not to share this information with others to help ensure protection of their privacy and confidentiality.

Supporting teens in their care

This update supports more direct engagement between teens and care teams — an important step in long-term patient engagement and continuity of care, while following federal and state privacy laws that guide adolescent care. The change also aligns with Mayo Clinic’s strategic priorities, by improving digital access and streamlining how patients and families engage with their healthcare.

What is not changing?

It is important to note that:

  • Identity verification requirements still apply when setting up a Mayo Clinic patient portal account.
  • Privacy protections for teen accounts will continue to follow federal and state laws.
  • Caregiver access, also called “authorized user access” or “proxy access,” for teens, remains unchanged. This means that when a child turns 13, a caregiver’s access to that account automatically changes from full access to what is called “limited access” or “limited caregiver access” for the parents or guardians. Limited caregiver access allows parents or guardians of teens to view:
    • Allergy and immunization lists.
    • Some appointment information.
    • Secure messaging.
    • Express Care Online visits, where available.
