Winter brings a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Olmsted County and the City of Rochester's parks. Imagine strolling through snow-covered trails at Oxbow Park, where the crisp air and serene surroundings invite reflection and wonder. Whether you're counting birds in the Great Backyard Bird Count or gliding along cross-country ski trails, these parks offer countless ways to connect with the winter landscape.

Spending time outdoors during the colder months is not just about braving the chill; it's about embracing the season and reaping the mental and physical health benefits that nature offers. From recreational activities to educational programs, the parks provide countless opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with the natural world.

Oxbow Park in Byron serves as a hub for engaging in educational experiences that cater to people of all ages. With its interactive nature programs, ambassador animals at the Zollman Zoo and well-maintained trails, the park creates an inviting environment for visitors to connect with wildlife and enjoy hands-on learning opportunities. Its programs aim to foster curiosity and connection with wildlife. For example:

  • Homeschool Programs: On Jan. 21, children ages 3 and up can learn about reptiles and amphibians for $5 per student, followed by a session on animal adaptations on Feb. 20. Both programs include hands-on learning opportunities with ambassador animals.
  • Wildlife Highlights: Explore the fascinating world of groundhogs on Feb. 1 during the "All About Woodchucks" program or watch snakes being fed at the Nature Center on Feb. 9 while learning intriguing facts about these creatures.
  • Bird Watching: On Feb. 15, participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count, where a naturalist will assist in identifying and counting birds. Binoculars and field guides will be provided.
  • All About Owls: Join the Feb. 23 event to learn about owl courtship, habitats and behaviors with live birds on display.

For those seeking physical activity, Oxbow Park offers snowshoe, cross-country ski and kicksled rentals for $5, ensuring visitors can fully immerse themselves in the snowy trails. The park also provides accessibility options, such as an Action Trackchair for individuals with mobility challenges and sensory sensitivity kits, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors.

Chester Woods Park also embraces winter with a variety of programs designed to bring people outdoors. Its scenic groomed trails are perfect for snowshoeing and its tranquil lake adds a magical backdrop for events like the Candlelight Snowshoe/Hike. The park's family-friendly atmosphere is enhanced by unique programs such as the Youth Ice Expo and Egg Carton Gardens, ensuring visitors of all ages can find something to enjoy.

  • Snowshoe Hike: On Jan. 18, join a guided snowshoe hike starting at the boat ramp kiosk to explore the park's groomed trails.
  • Kicksled Demo: Try out these fun winter recreation items on Jan. 19 at the park office.
  • Candlelight Snowshoe/Hike: Enjoy a magical evening stroll along a luminary-lit trail on Feb. 1. Warm up afterward with a bonfire and hot cocoa.
  • Youth Ice Expo: On Feb. 15, children ages 3 to 15 can enjoy ice-themed activities during the 13th annual Youth Ice Expo, organized by Project MN Youth Outdoors.
  • Egg Carton Gardens: On March 15, celebrate the longer days by planting seeds in egg cartons, which can later be transplanted to home gardens. Reserve your spot by March 10 by calling 507-328-7350.

Snowshoe, cross-country ski and kicksled rentals are also available daily for independent exploration of Chester Woods' trails.

The City of Rochester's Parks & Recreation system enhances urban living with numerous winter activities:

  • Cross-Country Skiing and Sledding: Trails are available at Gamehaven Reservoir, Eastwood Golf Course, Quarry Hill Park and Essex Park. Sledding enthusiasts can visit Judd Park for thrilling downhill sledding fun.
  • Ice Skating: Nine outdoor rinks are open citywide, with skate rentals available at Soldiers Field Park on weekends from noon to 4 p.m. starting in January. Indoor skating sessions are also offered at the Rochester Recreation Center, with skate rentals available.
  • Quarry Hill Nature Center: Rent cross-country skis or snowshoes to explore the snowy trails or participate in educational programs to deepen your connection with nature.

Beyond recreation, the benefits of spending time in nature during winter are profound. According to a study published by the American Psychological Association, spending as little as 20 minutes in a natural environment can significantly reduce stress hormone levels. Additionally, outdoor physical activities like hiking and skiing have been linked to improved cardiovascular health and enhanced mental clarity, making winter adventures both enjoyable and beneficial. Studies show that outdoor activities can reduce stress, enhance mood and improve overall health. The combination of physical exercise and fresh air invigorates the body and mind, while the beauty of snow-covered landscapes provides a sense of peace and wonder.

So, bundle up, head outside and discover the magic of winter in your local parks. By doing so, you'll not only create lasting memories but also nurture your mind, body and soul.
