New Year brings new health, wellness classes

The New Year brings new opportunities to help you achieve your health and wellness goals. One community resource is WellConnect, which offers ongoing evidence-based programs to promote better health. From senior exercise and fall prevention, diabetes prevention, resources for family caregivers, the list goes on. Here's what's being offered so far in 2018. For complete details, click on each program. All are welcome to participate!

REACH. Ongoing, one-on-one consulting program for caregivers of those with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. 

  • What: Individualized sessions scheduled between you and a REACH consultant. There typically are four, one-hour sessions either in-person or on the phone. This is an ongoing class and you can register at anytime. 
  • Cost: $25 per session/sliding fee scale

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. Ongoing, low-impact physical activity program proven to reduce pain and decrease stiffness. 

  • When: Saturdays, January 6-November 24, 11-11:30 a.m. This is an ongoing class, you can register anytime. 
  • Where: Cambodian Church of the Nazarene, 3343 E. Circle Dr., Rochester

Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance - Beginner. Beginning class teaches balance skills, good body alignment and coordinates Tai Chi movements to help reduce falls. 

  • When: Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-2 p.m., March 12-June 6
  • Where: Olmsted Medical Center-Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance, 5155 55th Street NW, Rochester
  • Cost: Fee to be determined. Please call for pricing.

Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance - Advanced. Group class teaches balance skills, good body alignment, muscle strength, flexibility and mobility. Suitable for people with a history of falls, balance disorders, leg muscle weakness and walking difficulty. Participants must have completed the Tai Ji Quan - Beginner class before joining. 

  • When: Mondays and Wednesdays, 2-3 p.m., March 12-June 6
  • Where: Olmsted Medical Center-Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance, 5155 55th Street NW, Rochester

Diabetes Prevention Program. Year-long program addressing fitness, nutrition and other topics for those at-risk of diabetes. 

  • When: Session starts April 9. Meets one time per week on Mondays from 4-5 p.m. for nutrition-based class, plus two hours per week for exercise at Learn to be Fit class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m.
  • Where: Exercisabilities, Inc., 2530 North Broadway, Rochester
  • Cost: Insurance may reimburse or $520 for full year

Diabetes Prevention Program. Year-long program addressing fitness, nutrition and other topics for those at-risk of diabetes. 

  • When: Session starts September 17. Meets one time per week for four months, then tapers to two times per month. Meets on Mondays from 4-6 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. for personal trainer-led exercise class. 
  • Where: Exercisabilities, Inc., 2530 North Broadway, Rochester
  • Cost: Insurance may reimburse or $520 for full year
