To-do item this week: Go through the medicine cabinet and bathroom cupboards to gather up unused or expired prescription drugs. On Saturday, Oct. 27, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. drop them off at the west entrance patient drop-off area of Mayo Clinic's Gonda Building, 200 First St. SW in Rochester.

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. It's your opportunity to help curtail the misuse of prescription drugs. According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

At the 15th annual Take-Back Day in April:

  • 4,683 law enforcement agencies participated
  • 5,842 collection sites were set up
  • 949,046 lbs. (474.5 tons) f drugs were collected

If you're not able to make Saturday's event, you can always drop off unused prescription meds at the Adult Detention Center, 101 4th St. SE (24/7/365).
